Most defensive handgun training occurs in daylight or at well-lit ranges, but real-world conditions often present challenges in low-light environments.
Realistic Defense, LLC offers a Low Light Handgun Training course designed for those looking to develop intermediate handgun skills essential for safely operating a handgun in reduced-light situations while making sound decisions under pressure.
The course addresses a critical aspect of defensive handgun training: the necessity of accurately identifying and assessing your surroundings before choosing to engage a target.
Students will gain hands-on experience with handheld flashlights and, when appropriately equipped, pistol-mounted lights. They will learn techniques for navigating, searching, identifying potential threats, operating their handgun, and engaging targets effectively in low-light settings.
This practical, live-fire course covers equipment selection, flashlight techniques, handgun manipulation, movement, target identification, and shooting exercises tailored for low-light environments.
Course Overview
Training kicks off with discussions on low-light equipment and its practical uses. Students will evaluate the pros and cons of various lighting systems, including:
- Handheld tactical flashlights
- Pistol-mounted weapon lights
- Light output and beam characteristics
- Carry and storage considerations
- Holster and support equipment
- Integrating a flashlight into an everyday-carry handgun system
The course transitions into the practical application of these tools.
Students will hone their skills in using light for searching, navigating, identifying threats, assessing situations, and making informed decisions in low-light environments. Emphasis will be placed on understanding that the goal of illumination extends beyond shooting; it involves gathering enough information to make the right choice.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion, students will gain a better understanding of:
- How to select an appropriate handheld flashlight for defensive use
- Configuring a pistol-mounted weapon light effectively
- Understanding the advantages and limitations of handheld and weapon-mounted lights

Throughout the course, students will need to apply their existing handgun fundamentals while adapting to the added challenges presented by darkness, artificial light, movement, and limited visibility.
Experience Requirements
This is an intermediate-level handgun course and is NOT recommended for new shooters.
Participants must arrive with a solid understanding of their handgun and be capable of using it safely in a group training setting.
Before attending, students should be able to comfortably and safely:
- Load and unload their handgun
- Operate all controls of their handgun
- Demonstrate consistent safe gun-handling practices
- Apply foundational handgun marksmanship skills
- Safely draw and secure their handgun in a belt-mounted holster
- Perform basic reloads
- Maintain muzzle and trigger-finger discipline without constant instructor supervision
Safety is the primary concern throughout the course.
Students who fail to meet safety requirements or cannot demonstrate the minimum handgun skills needed for the class may be dismissed from training.

Required Equipment
Students must bring:
- A semi-automatic handgun — NO REVOLVERS for this course
- A minimum of 2 magazines
- A dominant-side belt-mounted handgun holster
- A magazine/ammunition pouch
- A handheld flashlight
- A sturdy belt, at least 1.5 inches wide
- Footwear suitable for movement and rapid changes in direction
- Comfortable civilian clothing appropriate for the weather and training conditions unless attending in duty uniform
- Eye protection suitable for low-light training, including clear/night lenses or appropriate non-shattering prescription glasses
- Hearing protection — earmuffs or earplugs
- Approximately 300 rounds of handgun ammunition
Optional Equipment
- Pistol-mounted weapon light (STRONGLY SUGGESTED)
- An appropriate holster designed to safely accommodate the handgun and mounted light
- Additional magazines
- A backup handheld flashlight
- Spare batteries or a rechargeable power source
Holster Requirements
Given that this course involves drawing, movement, and handgun manipulation under reduced visibility, proper holster selection is crucial.
All holsters must:
- Completely support and securely retain the handgun
- Remain open and not collapse when the handgun is drawn
- Properly attach to and fit the belt
- Fully cover the trigger guard when the handgun is holstered
- Position the handgun in a safe orientation for drawing and holstering
- Allow one-handed drawing and holstering without assistance from the support hand
"Trigger-finger" style retention devices are not permitted.
Students utilizing a pistol-mounted weapon light must have a holster specifically designed to safely accommodate their handgun and light combination.
Final holster compliance is determined by the instructor's discretion.
Ammunition Requirements
Estimated round count: 300 rounds of handgun ammunition
When shooting at steel targets, ammunition restrictions will be strictly enforced.
- Lead-core ammunition only on steel
- No armor-piercing ammunition
- No green-tip or brown-tip ammunition
- No surrogate or other prohibited ammunition for use on steel targets
Students are responsible for ensuring their ammunition meets range and course guidelines.
Why Low-Light Training?
Simply owning a flashlight or mounting a light on a handgun does not automatically equip a shooter with the skills needed to operate effectively in darkness. Low-light environments can introduce a host of challenges relating to visual information, identification, movement, handgun manipulation, decision-making, and the proficient use of artificial light.
Students should finish this course with a heightened understanding of both the capabilities and limitations of their equipment as well as a practical framework for integrating light into their existing defensive handgun training and skills. The true objective extends beyond merely learning to shoot in the dark; it's about being able to see, identify, evaluate, decide, and respond appropriately.

Holster Requirements:

- Must not collapse once drawn.
- Must fit properly to the belt.
- When holstered, the trigger guard must be completely covered.
- Must be oriented in a safe direction for drawing.
- “Trigger Finger” style retention devices are not permitted.
- Must be able to draw and holster one-handed; Support hand cannot be utilized.
- Holster compliance is at the discretion of the Instructor.
