About Jeffrey Etessam
Jeffrey Etessam is the owner and lead instructor of Realistic Defense, LLC, bringing more than three decades of law enforcement, firearms, tactical, and instructor experience to every course.
Jeffrey began his law enforcement career with the Mid Size North Texas Police Department in 1990 and served for nearly 30 years before retiring in 2019. During his career, he spent approximately 10 years working midnight patrol and more than two decades involved in training and instructor development. He also served as a member of the department’s SWAT team, gaining extensive experience in tactical operations, firearms, decision-making under stress, and the realities of applying training in real-world environments.
His experience extends beyond his law enforcement career. Jeffrey has continued to work in the firearms and tactical training community, including serving as an instructor with RONIN TACTICS, INC., Craft International, and Combat Shooting and Tactics (CSAT). His areas of focus include firearms and tactics, personal defense, law enforcement training, use-of-force considerations, and developing practical skills that can be applied under pressure.
Jeffrey founded Realistic Defense, LLC with a straightforward philosophy: Train to Survive.
Realistic Defense training is built around more than simply learning how to shoot. Courses emphasize developing sound fundamentals, understanding why techniques work, recognizing and correcting performance issues, making good decisions under stress, and building skills that can be applied in realistic situations.
Training programs range from handgun fundamentals and pistol-mounted red dot development to precision rifle, close-quarters tactics, home defense, low-light training, medical/self-aid skills, and advanced law enforcement instructor development.
Jeffrey's instructional philosophy is based on continuous learning and the understanding that firearms and tactical training must evolve. Rather than relying solely on techniques because "that's the way it's always been done," Realistic Defense evaluates current methods, equipment, data, and lessons learned from the law enforcement, military, competitive shooting, and professional training communities.
Whether working with a responsible armed citizen, an experienced shooter, or a law enforcement firearms instructor, Jeffrey's goal remains the same:
