AR-15 Intermediate Range Engagements (3 Yards to 200 Yards)
Duration: Full-Day Course (6–8 hours
Skill Level: Intermediate (basic rifle safety and handling required)
This course can be physically demanding. Movement from position to position, level changes (standing, kneeling, prone) during some drills is required.
Platform: AR-15 (5.56/.223 or similar)
Course Overview:
This course is designed for shooters looking to extend their effective range and deepen their understanding of intermediate-distance rifle engagements. Using the AR-15 platform, students will collect and apply real-world ballistic data from 5 to 200 yards to improve consistency, confidence, and speed in varied terrain and conditions.
Core Topics Covered:
- Ballistics & Data Collection:
Understand external ballistics relevant to 5.56/.223 and similar cartridges. Collect real-time DOPE (data on previous engagements) at 3, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 150 and 200 yards. Learn the trajectory curve and how it applies in the field.
- Holdovers & Reticle Usage:
Learn practical methods for holdover at varying distances using your optic’s reticle. Zeroing (50/200, 100, or other options) and how to adjust for your zero at non-standard ranges.
- Ammo Selection:
Compare different bullet weights (e.g., 55gr vs 62gr vs 77gr) and how they behave at longer distances. Understand terminal performance vs accuracy tradeoffs.
- Optic Selection & Usage:
Discussion and live usage of red dots, LPVOs, prism scopes, and magnifiers. Understand eye relief, parallax, reticle features, and how to maximize your chosen optic.
- Rifle Setup & Slinging:
Efficient sling use for positional shooting (sitting, kneeling, supported prone, barricades). Rifle accessories that support stability and recoil management.
- Wind & Environmental Factors:
Introductory wind reading, mirage interpretation, and environmental impact on point of impact at intermediate distances.
- Shooter Efficiency & Recoil Management:
Techniques to manage recoil, maintain sight picture, and stay on target for quick follow-ups.
Equipment Requirements:
- AR-15 rifle in good working condition
