AR-15 Intermediate Range Engagements (3 Yards to 200 Yards)
Duration: Full-Day Course (6–8 hours)
Skill Level: Intermediate (basic rifle safety and handling required)
This AR-15 training course can be physically demanding. Movement from position to position and level changes (standing, kneeling, prone) during some drills are required.
Platform: AR-15 (5.56/.223 or similar)
Course Overview:
This intermediate rifle course is designed for shooters looking to extend their effective range and deepen their understanding of rifle engagements at intermediate distances. Utilizing the AR-15 platform, students will gather and apply real-world ballistic data from 5 to 200 yards to enhance their consistency, confidence, and speed across various terrains and conditions.
Core Topics Covered:
Ballistics & Data Collection:
Understand the external ballistics relevant to the 5.56/.223 and similar cartridges. Collect real-time DOPE (data on previous engagements) at 3, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 150, and 200 yards. Learn the trajectory curve and its application in the field.
Holdovers & Reticle Usage:
Learn practical methods for holdover at varying distances using your optic’s reticle. Zeroing (50/200, 100, or other options) and adjusting for your zero at non-standard ranges will also be covered.
Ammo Selection:
Compare different bullet weights (e.g., 55gr vs 62gr vs 77gr) and their behavior at longer distances. Understand the trade-offs between terminal performance and accuracy.
Optic Selection & Usage:
Discussion and live usage of red dots, LPVOs, prism scopes, and magnifiers. Gain insights into eye relief, parallax, reticle features, and how to maximize your chosen optic during this AR-15 training.
Rifle Setup & Slinging:
Efficiently manage sling use for positional shooting (sitting, kneeling, supported prone, barricades), along with exploring rifle accessories that support stability and recoil management.
Wind & Environmental Factors:
Get an introductory overview of wind reading, mirage interpretation, and the environmental impact on point of impact at intermediate distances.
Shooter Efficiency & Recoil Management:
Learn techniques to manage recoil effectively, maintain sight picture, and remain on target for quick follow-ups.
Equipment Requirements:
- AR-15 rifle in good working condition
- Quality optic (red dot with or without magnifier or LPVO)
- 300-400 rounds of ammunition (No Green tip, Steel core, AP)
- 2-point sling
- Rifle support (bipod, bag, or backpack)
